Wrinkle Relaxers
What are wrinkle relaxers?
Neuromodulators, like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Jeuveau® are FDA-approved medications that are often referred to as “wrinkle relaxers,” since they are designed to be injected into specific muscles of the face to reduce the development and appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing specific muscles of your face.
Although historically most patients have waited until after they’ve already developed fine lines and wrinkles to seek treatment with neuromodulators, nowadays patients are often seeking this treatment more proactively to prevent or delay the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, in order to “look like themselves for as long as possible.”
Although muscle tension is not the only cause of the formation of fine lines and wrinkles it is a major cause and these treatments are very effective at addressing this major cause.
How do wrinkle relaxers work?
Over time, repeated contractions of your facial muscles used for frowning, squinting, or raising your eyebrows will cause your skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of unwanted facial lines. Wrinkle relaxers, like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Jeuveau® (our favorites at the office) work beneath the surface to temporarily block nerve signals to specific muscles thereby temporarily reducing the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines in adults – to help them look visibly smoother. Their effects usually last approximately 4 months, but when treatments are repeated over time long-term the effects may start to last longer due to weakening of the targeted muscles.

What to expect at your appointment?
These treatments do not require much time. Patients are usually in and out in 30 minutes or less. “Before photos” are taken on all of our patients upon their arrival and prior to the administration of wrinkle relaxing medications. The injections are done using very tiny needles that are well-tolerated.
How much downtime should you plan for?
After your BOTOX® Cosmetic or Jeuveau® treatment, you are able to resume your normal activities of daily life (with a few exceptions). Avoid laying flat, massaging the area, working out, and entering a hot tub or sauna for 4 hours after your injections.
How to prepare for your treatment?
Preparation for your wrinkle relaxer treatment is minimal, but there are a few things that we ask of you. If possible, it is best if you arrive at the clinic with a clean face, free of makeup (if you are coming from work, we understand and will cleanse you appropriately when you arrive. Although bruising is rare, consumption of tylenol or NSAID’s such as ibuprofen, or of coffee or other caffeinated drinks, or alcohol, can increase your risk of bruising, so we ask that you not consume any of these things the day of your treatment. We ask that you drink lots of water and hydrate your skin. Dry skin is always more traumatized from injections.
When can you hope to see results?
Wrinkle relaxers, like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Jeuveau®, take 10-14 days to kick-in, with optimal effects occurring two weeks after injection. Therefore, plan accordingly! You will want to receive your wrinkle relaxer injections 2-3 weeks before a big event or holiday.
How much do these treatments cost?
We offer competitive pricing on all of our neuromodulator treatments. The industry standard is that these treatments are paid for “per unit” used. It is a given that the payment goes towards the time as well as the knowledge and expertise of the doctor performing the procedure. On average, patients receive 30 – 60 units during a treatment session. The number of units required is dependent on the treatment area, the strength of the muscle causing the wrinkle, and the desired outcome. We do not participate in the BOTOX® Cosmetic loyalty program; however, do participate in the Jeuveau® loyalty program.
